Long Bio
Hi! I’m Noemie, a theatre-maker, writer, dramaturg, performer and community organiser based on Wurundjeri country in Naarm (melbourne).
My work often engages with sites and histories where queer culture, ecological crisis and composting occur – and is driven by a deep belief in the social, political and joy-giving possibilities of performance, gathering and storytelling. My performance work has taken place in theatres, galleries, alleyways, dinner parties and blanket forts.
My shows include: Mother of Compost (M1 Singapore Fringe Festival, Melbourne Fringe nominee Best Theatre 2023), The Lion Never Sleeps (Australian Book Review’s Arts Highlights of 2019, Performing Arts WA awards 2021), The Trouble-Makers (You Are Here Festival 2019, Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts residency) & Democracy Repair Services (The Blue Room Theatre 2023).
The Lion Never Sleeps, a walking performance about Perth’s queer history and the community response to the AIDS crisis, was nominated for 4 Performing Arts WA awards and was named in Australian Book Review’s ‘Arts Highlights of 2019’.
In 2023, I was the Graduate Dramaturg at Red Stitch Actors Theatre and worked as a dramaturg on the Australian premiere of Shhh by Clare Barron, directed by Emma Valente. My writing has appeared in Australia Poetry, Rabbit Poetry, Cordite, Disclaimer Journal & Best of Australian Poems 2020.
I was the Creative Coordinator of KickstART Festival Youth Week WA 2022 at Propel Youth Arts WA and am a graduate of the Bachelor of Performing Arts (Performance Making) at WAAPA and Master of Theatre (Dramaturgy) at VCA. I also organise and teach Yiddish singing groups (Zingendik in Melbourne, Mama Loshn in Perth) connecting queer Jewish people with cultural practice and community.
I was a co-founder of Arts & Cultural Workers for Climate Action in WA and have been organising on climate justice and divestment for the last ten years. I am currently on the Global Youth Committee for the Global Institute for Women’s Leadership and collaborate regularly with Canadian company Mammalian Diving Reflex.
I was the winner of the 2020 Venie Holmgren Environmental Poetry Prize, 2021 Western Australian Young Environmentalist of the Year and 2023 Best Writing award at the Blue Room Theatre for Democracy Repair Services.
